The Gutter: Going Deeper

So, I have finished reading The Gutter. I have said it before and will sing its praises until I die, this is a must read if you do or want to do any sort of living as a Christian. Period.

Since it has so many amazing qualities and attributes and chapters and elements, I'm going to blog through it as I re-read it (similarly to how I have done with Father Fiction by Donald Miller). All posts will be tagged, so that instead of reading through my entire blog, if you are only wanting to keep up with the ones about this book, click "The Gutter" tag and they will all pop up.

With that being said, I want to dive right into a point that is made throughout the entire book. God gives us a calling. Each person, as a creation of God, has a calling. Maybe you are called to reach out to drug addicts. Maybe your calling is within the homeless community. Maybe you are being asked to serve the elderly. Or the daycare children. Or the kids that play softball. The areas where we are called are as limitless as the water particles in the clouds, and each are as unique.

When God makes us, He makes us different. There are no two people that are identical, not exact replicas or each other entirely. When He creates our calling, they are all different too. I may reach out to young women who have been cheated on because it's my passion. My friend has a heart for the grieving. Another friend loves to help people save money when financial situations are tough. No matter your calling, it's there within you. It is up to you to act upon it. It is your choice to make it your mission to commit to what God is calling you to do.

And there will be naysayers. Oooh, boy, will there be naysayers, but we'll go there in another post...first, think about it. What do you think God is calling you to do in service?
